The Black Company series is a dark fantasy series written by Glen Cook. The series chronicles several decades of the long history of a brotherhood of mercenaries called the Black Company, the last of the legendary Free Companies of Khatovar. It consists of 11 novels, 2 stand-alone short stories, and 4 pre-publication short stories that later appeared as novel chapters. The first 10 novels are. Glen Charles Cook (born July 9, 1944)^[1] is an American writer of science fiction and contemporary fantasy, known for The Black Company and Garrett P.I. fantasy series.

Biography[edit]

Cook was born in New York City.^[1] Cook spent time in the United States Navy and later worked his way through college. Cook began to write in earnest while working for General Motors at an auto assembly plant in a job which was'hard to learn, but [involved] almost no mental effort', writing as many as three books per year.^[2]

Cook wrote The Black Company, a novel published by Tor Fantasy in May 1984. It began a gritty fantasy series of the same name (or Chronicles of the Black Company)^[1] following an elite mercenary unit through several decades of its history. As of 2016, it comprises the novels published in three subseries 1984–85, 1989–90, and 1996–2000, plus recent short fiction.^[1] It has become something of a cult classic, especially among current and former members of the military. When asked about the series' popularity among soldiers, Cook replied: 'The characters act like the guys actually behave. It doesn't glorify war; it's just people getting on with the job. The characters are real soldiers. They're not soldiers as imagined by people who've never been in the service. That's why service guys like it.'^[3] Cook is also known for his Garrett P.I. series, which tells the haphazard adventures of hardboileddetective Garrett, and his Dread Empire series.^{[citation needed]}

The Black Company is a series of dark fantasy books written by American authorGlen Cook. The series combines elements of epic fantasy and dark fantasy as it follows an elite mercenary unit, The Black Company, through roughly forty years of its approximately four-hundred-year history.

Plot summary[edit]

The series follows an elite mercenary unit, The Black Company, last of the Free Companies of Khatovar, through roughly forty years of its approximately four-hundred-year history. Cook mixes fantasy with military fiction in gritty, down-to-earth portrayals of the Company's chief personalities and its struggles.

The main chronology spans nine novels, which can be grouped into three sections: The Books of the North recount the Company's dealings with the Empire of Lady; The Books of the South follow the Company on its journey back to its beginnings in Khatovar; Glittering Stone sees the Company achieve victory over its employer's enemies, and move on to its destiny.

Additionally, there is one spin-off novel, The Silver Spike, which follows events concerning former members of the Company and one of its adversaries.
